Wines can only be eligible for quality marks if they meet stringent requirements, including the place of origin, the specific grapes used, and the production methods utilised. DOK and IĠT were established to regulate wines manufactured in the EU. Most DOK and IĠT wines in Malta may be identified by the collar label, commonly known as a banderole, which is attached to the wine bottle itself.

Depending on the level of protection for which a wine qualifies, various quality wines have distinct banderoles; for IĠT wines, they are pale green, while for DOK wines, they are pale yellow. Banderoles are constructed of high-security paper and have a unique number for traceability in order to prevent counterfeits and provide consumers peace of mind. Additionally, a holographic security strip substituting the excise stamp, can also be seen on the right side of the banderole, for each bottle of wine which is sold domestically. This hologram serves as a guarantee that the excise tax has been paid and is a requirement of the Customs Department. This is why all other wines, including Maltese DOK and IĠT wines, lack the pink Excise banderols (rectangular or round).

Additionally, a QR code can now be found on the banderole, allowing consumers to scan the QR code directly from their phone, instantly displaying all the information about that particular wine at their fingertips. With this technological component in place, consumers can become more aware of the wine quality they are purchasing, as well as more informed about the authentic wine industry that is present on our islands.
